Mini-THON raises money for Four Diamonds

Donegal High School raised more than $15,000 this year at its annual Mini-THON.

Mini-THONs were started in 1993 and are modeled after the Penn State dance marathon held every year in State College. Mini-THONs have raised more than $64 million dollars over the past 30 years for Four Diamonds.

According to http://www.fourdiamonds.org, the organization's mission is "to conquer childhood cancer by assisting families through superior care, comprehensive support and innovative research." All monies go to children and their families fighting childhood cancer at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

All Donegal High School students are eligible to join Mini-THON club. Club officers start off by attending the annual leadership conference in August, which includes hundreds of school districts across five states. There, they learn about fundraising ideas and how to plan a Mini-THON event.

Throughout the year, they raise money through Gold Out sporting events, Delay Day, Mr. Donegal voting, selling Gold Out T-shirts and fundraisers at Rita's and Isaac's. They also sold _fl_owers for homecoming and are currently selling _fl_owers for prom.

Along with the fundraising events, each student who participates must raise at least $50 in his or her individual donor drive. The top fundraising student this year was Mini-THON president Maddy Eichelberger, who raised $1,100.

The final Mini-THON event held at the high school included food and prizes thanks to many local business donations, as well as activities, including Zumba, a volleyball tournament and a lip sync contest.
