Manheim Central Will Present "Anne Of Green Gables"

A classic book will come to life when "Anne of Green Gables" is performed by Manheim Central High School students. The show will run on Friday, Jan. 14, and Saturday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. Due to ongoing construction at the high school, the play will be performed at Manheim Central Middle School, 261 White Oak Road.

"This is a classic coming-of-age story," said Audrey Cressler, a senior who portrays the title character. "Audiences can expect some sad tears and some comical tears because there are situations in the play where the characters are upset about things that are really more funny than sad."

Senior Alec Achen said "Anne of Green Gables" is a family-friendly show that will appeal to a wide audience. "It's about a girl who is adopted by two people who are looking for help around their farm," said Alec, who portrays Matthew, one of Anne's guardians. "They are surprised by who they get when Anne shows up."

Although Anne may be a surprise to her new guardians, she wins them over with her charm. "She's a very precocious child," Audrey stated. "She reminds me of how I was when I was little. She loves to read, and she never stops talking. She's curious."

Playing a character that hits close to home is a fun challenge, she noted. "It forces you to be truthful with yourself," Audrey said. "Anne can be a little annoying, especially when she talks a lot, and I realized that's not something I like to admit about myself."

Alec noted that "Anne of Green Gables" showcases what it means to love someone, even if that person is different than you. "The character of Anne is lovable," he stated. "This is a show about family. It's about accepting your family for who they are. Ultimately, it's a show about community."

The show features a cast of 33 students with a crew of eight. To purchase tickets to "Anne of Green Gables," visit https://tinyurl.com/yc2brbh5. Tickets will also be available at the door.
