Luminaria walk planned in Akron

A Christmas luminaria walk coordinated by Pilgrims Mennonite Church will be held in Roland Park, 221 N. 11th St., Akron, on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Attendees may choose from two paths to take this year - a lantern-lit path through evergreens or a level path from the parking lot for easier walking. More luminarias have been added this year for a total of more than 800 electric candle luminarias. The blocks that give weight to the paper bags were borrowed from Mainspring of Ephrata's Winters Leadership Memorial Committee, which holds an annual luminaria walk on Veterans Day. Carols, pop-up musical groups, homemade cookies, hot cocoa, and cider will all be part of the event.

Hilltop Harmony will be among the performers at the event. The musical group includes Dave Lefever, Dennis Maust, Sue Stamm Miller, and Becca Rupley with Laura Miller. Additionally, a trio of Mae Beidler, Josiah Gascho, and Lily Zimmerman and a quartet of Dylan Chares, Ellie Cunalata, Abby Martin, and Elyse Zimmerman will perform. Barry Kreider will be the master of ceremonies this year.

Many churches and businesses have become event sponsors, and volunteers from churches are contributing in many ways, such as making cookies, providing music, and serving as guides.

About 400 people attended the first walk in 2023.

People are asked to park in the lot by Pavilion I, near the playground. There, volunteers will be on hand to direct people.

The event is free of charge. Attendees are advised to bring a flashlight.

The luminaria walk will be canceled if there is wintry weather or rain that makes travel unsafe. For updates, call 717-859-2986 or visit https://tinyurl.com/LWwebsite.
