Lower Dauphin Excels At Envirothon

Teams of students from Lower Dauphin High School captured second and third places in the annual Dauphin County Envirothon on April 27.

The team of Luke Johns, Austin Little, Abby Nissley, Avery Book and Conor Grubb took second place, and the team of Emma Dickinson, Collin Gourley, Carolynn O'Donnell, Alex McGlaughlin and Lauren Wahlers came in third. A team from Upper Dauphin Area High School placed first.

The Envirothon is an environmental education program made available to Pennsylvania Conservation Districts in partnership with related state and federal agencies and other organizations. The Envirothon program is designed to test high school students' knowledge of Pennsylvania's natural resources and environmental sciences. The program emphasizes the importance of environmental sensitivity while stressing a need to achieve a social, ecological, and economic balance. Envirothons are held every spring in counties across Pennsylvania.

Participating high schools provide teams of up to five students who are tested in five subject areas - aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife, and a current issue. A different current environmental issue is selected every year.

Lower Dauphin's second-place team had the highest score in the wildlife category, and the third-place team had the highest score in the forestry.
