Library Will Showcase Student Creativity

Every day, students in Donegal School District demonstrate talent and creativity in their art classes. Now the public will have a chance to see the results of their efforts when Milanof-Schock Library hosts its annual art show, featuring works from Donegal students in kindergarten through grade 12. The show will be held in the community room at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"It's a drop-in art show, so patrons can come and go as they please," shared Jazmynn Whitney, operations coordinator for the library, who described the show as a low-key, casual event. "There is going to be artwork displayed throughout the community room for patrons to go through and look at. We will have comment cards for people to submit for as many pieces of artwork as they want."

This is the eighth year for the event, which began as a group effort, Whitney said.

"One of the library staff members had a child in school and was disappointed that there wasn't a good place for all of the students' art to be displayed. So, through that prompting, the library stepped in and partnered with the school to make an art show happen," she explained. "It started out much smaller with only high school art, but over the years it has grown to include artwork of students grades kindergarten through 12th."

People can expect to see a full range of art styles, including both two- and three-dimensional works.

"In past years it's been a wide variety - charcoal drawings, paintings, sculptures, prints, mosaics," Whitney remarked. "It's all kinds of different art!"

Attendees may fill out comment cards to provide feedback to the artists, and Whitney said the response from the public to the show has always been supportive.

"We've always had very positive feedback for this event from parents, teachers and students," she said. "That's why we keep doing it each year."

She encourages people to take some time to stop by the library and enjoy the student works of art.

"This event is all about supporting the talented students in the Donegal School District!" she said. "Coming is a great way to show your support of the students. Visitors can expect to see a wide range of art and a lot of talent and interesting pieces."

There is no charge to attend the art show. For more information on the show and other library programs, visit https://mslibrary.org.
