Library Will Host 20th Annual Benefit Auction

The Milanof-Schock Library is looking to practice a little "shelf control." Proceeds from the library's annual auction will be used to support shelf upgrades at the facility as well as bolster the library's collection and fund building upkeep.

The auction will be held at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, on Saturday, Aug. 27, beginning at 9 a.m.

"Our theme is 'The Roaring 20th,'" said Kim Beach, operations coordinator for the library, who noted that the '20s theme fits nicely with the fact that this year's auction is the library's 20th. "We're going to have a Model A car with folks dressed up in '20s gear, which will be great for photo ops. We'll have our staff wearing some '20s stuff like headbands with feathers, fedoras and arm garters."

The auction will be held outside this year, as it was last year, and will also feature a jumbo tent, donated by Hess Auction Group, which will donate the auctioneer services as well.

"We'll have a wide variety of items up for auction," Beach stated. "A. Lane Living donated folding Adirondack chairs. ... We had a donation of American Girl dolls, and we had a woman who made a red sequined flapper dress for one of the dolls." Additional items include custom-made woodworking, artwork and jewelry.

Children's activities will be offered in the backyard, hosted by library director of children and youth Miss Jan, and several food trucks will be on-site, including Dutch Country Hand-Rolled Soft Pretzels, Meat the Browns Mobile Kitchen and On My Grind Coffee. Music will be provided by a DJ.

Beach noted that she has high hopes for the financial success of this year's auction, adding, "We always hope to beat the previous auction total. I would love it if we got in the neighborhood of $25,000."

She noted that the auction would not be possible without the support of sponsors. "This year, we added a platinum level for our sponsors, and Hershey Heating & Air Conditioning said, 'We'd love to support you in that way,'" she said.

Beach emphasized that the auction gives the community a chance to support the library while allowing the organization to underscore everything it offers. "The library is not just about books," she said. "We have wonderful programs for all ages. We have computers that people use constantly. If you love your library for any reason or you just love your community, come on out for the auction. We'd love to have you there. It's just another great way to interact with the library."

Items available for advance bids are on display in the library's lobby, along with some buy-it-now items. For more information on the auction, including to preregister for a bidding number, call the library at 717-653-1510. Anyone who preregisters will receive an extra door prize entry at the auction.
