Library Friends to host plant sale, barbecue

Children in search of a Mother's Day gift and anyone looking for plants to enhance their patios or gardens are invited to attend the annual spring plant sale being presented by the Friends of the Moores Memorial Library on Saturday, May 11, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lions Community Park, 325 N. Bridge St., Christiana. The event will also feature a chicken barbecue.

Plants for sale will include a large assortment of hanging baskets and premade patio containers. "We will have 4-inch pots of geraniums and other flowers that children can buy for Mother's Day the following day," said Friends member Kate Valentino, noting that a baseball game is generally taking place in the park during the event. "We have a lot of kids come from the ball field, and they can get something for mom."

All plants will be on display in the pavilion at the park. In the case of rain, plants will be available in the Lions Community Building at the park. This year, no bedding plants or herbs will be sold.

"We buy (the flowers) wholesale," Valentino noted. "We will have more container pots this year because we sold out of them last year."

Chicken barbecue meals will be available beginning at 10 a.m. The cost of a meal includes a half-chicken, a bottle of water and a bag of chips. Randy Yoder will prepare the chickens on-site.

"We do a half-chicken (rather) than chicken legs," noted Joan Esworthy, Friends president, adding that the barbecue sells out quickly, so attendees are encouraged to arrive early.

Check and cash will be accepted for payment at the flower sale and the barbecue.

All proceeds from both events will benefit the many activities offered by the library, including the Summer Reading Program, as well as library expenditures. The Friends group recently purchased a new outdoor sign for the library and is looking to finance the cost of chimney repairs. A new sump pump is also needed to help with water issues in the basement of the library, where the Friends' Read Moore Book Store is located.

Those interested in supporting the library and joining the Friends are invited to attend a meeting of the group. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at the library at 2 p.m. More information about the group is available at www.facebook.com/FriendsOfTheMooresMemorialLibrary.

In addition, library director Trish Vandenbosch has announced two upcoming events that will be held at the library.

A program about macro photography will be offered on Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to noon. Led by professional photographers Ed and Zach Heaton, attendees will take part in a hands-on close-up photography class. People of all skill levels are welcome. Flowers and other props will be able, and attendees should bring their own cameras and tripods if they have one. A fee will be collected per person. Proceeds will benefit the library.

The library will also present a genealogy workshop on Saturday, May 18, at 10 a.m. Led by Darlene Colon, president of the Christiana Historical Society, attendees will learn how to research their own family history using historical documents.

To register for either event, stop by the library or contact Vandenbosch at chrlib@christianalibrary.org.
