Laughs Will Run Wild in "North Woods Nonsense"

Can politics play for laughs? Ask the director of Elizabethtown Homeschool Drama Club's fall production, and the answer is "yes."

"In today's political climate, this show will make everyone giggle," shared Ginger Wayde, describing "North Woods Nonsense." "We all know of someone in government who we think could be doing a better job. We've also all heard verbal spaghetti that doesn't make any sense. We've also all spent time in the store checkout line reading headlines from the scam sheets with their ridiculous stories. Coupled with character names to fit the locale, you will spend your evening chuckling, slapping your knee or maybe even snorting."

The play will be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, and at 1 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22, at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy.

Set in a rundown Maine hotel, "North Woods Nonsense" follows the chaos that erupts after a handyman's fake Bigfoot story attracts reporters, politicians and thrill-seekers. As an inept congresswoman and her aides arrive, the hotel owner seizes the chance to turn the wild rumor into even wilder fun.

The production features students in grades seven through 12. Wayde explained that each show she directs produces its own set of fun and unique challenges.

"This year's challenges land on two particular characters who need to be able to believably portray multiple layers of life reality - being sick, mosquito bites, sunburn, all layered on top of each other," she said. "We also have some fun freeze scenes where actors are frozen on stage while other scenes are occurring. The group of actors also got to learn how to time their lines to speak at the same time based on a cue. It's all part of team acting and being aware of all that is going on around you."

She noted the club's productions always draw an enthusiastic audience.

"Our faithful fans look forward to the drama club's performances every year," she said. "Not only do co-op families attend, but local community members come - and make sure to mark the date on their calendars! We love our audience and look forward to performing some quality entertainment for you!"

The Elizabethtown Homeschool Drama Club is part of the Life Enrichment Center (LEC) homeschool co-op in Mount Joy.

"LEC is a wonderful homeschooling community," Wayde shared. "Not only does it give kids a chance to gather with others in a group learning environment, it also gives moms a much-needed opportunity to connect with other moms to find support and encouragement on their homeschooling journeys. It's a great place to forge lifetime friendships for kids and moms." She added that this performance will feature three seniors: Shelby Gingrich, Alyssa DeCubellis and Jon Ainsley.

There is no charge to attend the performances, and no tickets are necessary.

"We provide free performances because we know how expensive it is to take your family to the theater," Wayde said. "My desire is always to provide family-friendly, affordable theater to the community. We do sell concessions and cast shout-outs where you can honor cast members with treats and messages. We gratefully accept donations, too."
