Lancaster Flute Ensemble to present concert

The Apostles Academy of Arts & Sciences at Church of the Apostles United Church of Christ, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will present a concert titled "Characters" by the Lancaster Flute Ensemble on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m. as part of its monthly concert series.

The Lancaster Flute Ensemble, formed in 2016, currently has more than 20 members from Lancaster, York, Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Lititz, Reading and Lebanon and regularly rehearses at Church of the Apostles. The group got its start when three enthusiasts met at a flute camp in the Poconos. Wanting to continue the musical camaraderie at home, they decided to form an ensemble in the Lancaster area. Welcoming players with diverse musical backgrounds, the ensemble works together to make playing a joyful experience.

The group features a variety of flutes, including piccolos, C flutes, alto and bass flutes and contrabass flutes. The group even incorporates a cello to enrich the sound. The repertoire spans classical, popular, sacred and folk music, with original arrangements by founding member Ray-Michael Kauffman.

As part of its outreach to the greater Lancaster area, the academy offers a variety of cultural programs, including concerts, music and art lessons, and support for local scholarship initiatives. Most recently, the academy contributed to STEAM programs in partnership with the Hempfield Foundation.
