Lampeter UMC Sets Annual Arts and Crafts Market

Lampeter United Methodist Church (UMC) will host its 11th annual arts and crafts market on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 1101 Village Road, Lancaster.

The event will feature goods from quality local artists and craftsmen, a food cake and bake sale, and a silent auction. Proceeds from the event will benefit local missionaries, as well as the HUB, a free cupboard on the campus of Millersville University.

"It's a good opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping," said Mary Martz, who is coordinating the event for the fifth time. "Our church supports four missionaries, and they're in the Middle East, Italy and Guatemala."

Jewelry, candles, home decor, birdhouses and herbal products are among the vast array of items that will be sold by the show's 32 local vendors. Martz said that the number of vendors at the show has increased in recent years.

Each of the 32 vendors will donate one of their items for the silent auction, which will also feature gift cards and passes for local businesses and experiences, including Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, Shady Maple, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm, Strasburg Pizza and Shear Fade in Strasburg. Several members of the congregation will also assemble and donate themed baskets for the auction.

"Coffee cups and hot chocolate, that kind of thing," Martz said of the baskets. "People can bid on those as well."

Homemade baked goods will also be for sale at the event, including pies, cakes, cookies and apple dumplings. There will also be a separate food cafe that includes hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecue and pizza that will be for sale.

Traci Frantz, a Quarryville-based author, will also be at the show. Frantz released her memoir "With Courage and Grace" last year; the book is a tribute to her daughter who died from breast cancer. Martz said she expects Frantz to sign books at the show.

The show is free to attend. Martz said that the church expects around 400 to 500 people to attend. Proceeds from the show will also benefit the church's children's ministry, which is in the process of restoring the site's playground.

"They need to do some excavating," Martz explained. "There's poor drainage up there, so it gets very muddy. They (also) want to do a walkway from our upper parking lot up to the playground; our property is a little hilly, so it'll make it easier for strollers and stuff to get up there. The swings and all that stuff also need some care."

The church will also hold a Thanksgiving meal on Thursday, Nov. 26. Registration is required; visit the church at http://www.lampeterumc.com or call 717-464-4161 for more information.
