Kraybill Art Show will spotlight creativity

Students in grades three through eight will showcase their creativity at the Kraybill Mennonite School Art Show. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 4, in the program room at Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy.

A wide variety of mediums will be featured, including some 3D artwork such as pinch pots and aluminum foil sculptures, said Jan Betty, director of children and youth for the library.

For the second year in a row, Betty worked with Kraybill Mennonite art teacher Bre Martinez to organize the show.

"It was such a success last year, we decided to do it again," Betty noted. The idea for the event came about after a Kraybill parent attended the Donegal Art Show held at annually at the library and inquired about doing a similar show featuring Kraybill students. Kraybill Mennonite School is open to students in prekindergarten through eighth grade and is located in Mount Joy, within the footprint served by the library.

While members of the community may view the artwork any time during the show, students will be available for a meet-and-greet to talk about their pieces from 10 to 11 a.m.

Although the student artists are young, Betty emphasized that people can expect to see impactful pieces in the show.

"Some of the art is based on the work of Georgia O'Keeffe," she said. "It's very exciting."

Holding events like the art show helps the library fulfill its mission to serve as a hub for public activities while fostering relationships between the library and other groups in the community.

"This is such a nice way for Kraybill to be involved in the community and meet the people of Mount Joy," she said.
