Knights Top Bucks for Fourth Straight Win
The Hempfield boys' basketball team won its fourth consecutive Lancaster-Lebanon League game on Thursday, January 20, defeating Conestoga Valley on the road 64-46.
Hempfield came on strong in the second half, after having taken a five-point lead into the locker room at intermission. The Knights outscored the Buckskins 19-10 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
While Cole Overbaugh made six baskets and three of his five free throws to top Hempfield in scoring with 15, Miguel Pena was throwing them down from three-point range. He made four treys and finished with 13 total points, tying Ben Troyer for the second- highest points total for the Knights in the contest. Parker Wolfe chipped in 12 points, including a pair of three-pointers.
Cameron Swinton led the Buckskins with a game-high 16.
The Knights won a close Saturday evening contest over Central Dauphin, in a non-league game played at Doe Run Elementary.
Hempfield outscored CD 14-10 in the final period to pull off the 42-37 win. It was only a one-point game heading into the fourth.
Michael Hester (11 pts) and Troyer (9 pts) each nailed a pair of three-pointers. Pena and Wolfe finished with seven points each.
Hempfield took to the road and continued its winning ways at Penn Manor on Tuesday, January 25.
The Knights soared past the Comets 57-46, thanks to a big third quarter in which they extended their four-point halftime advantage to 11 points, heading into the final period.
The 57-48 victory improved the Knights' league mark to 8-2 and 14-2 overall.
Pena was on fire, putting up 22 points as he hit from three-point range four times. Troyer finished with 11 points.
GIRLS' BASKETBALL
Hempfield had been holding the top spot in the Section One girls' basketball standings. In a crucial battle between the Black Knights and second place Penn Manor on Wednesday, January 26, the Comets expressed their desire to share the top tier of the standings as they posted a 44-28 win at Hempfield.
Through games of Wednesday, both teams stood at 9-1 in league play with the Knights at 12-2 overall.
The Comets holding Hempfield to only two points in the second quarter was one of the factors. The Comets, led by Lily Sugra's 14-point performance, went on to extend their 15-10 halftime lead to 28-17 heading into the final period.
Sophia Ott topped Hempfield in scoring with 10 points.
The Knights were coming off a 51-27 victory at home almost a week prior. They topped Conestoga Valley on Thursday, January 20, in an L-L League game that was tilted in Hempfield's favor 30-10 by halftime.
Lauren Moffatt, who sank three treys, tied Ott for the team lead in scoring with 11 points. Ava Baer finished with eight points as did Brynne Axe.
SWIMMING
The Hempfield girls suffered a tough 96-74 loss to Warwick on the road in L-L League swimming. The only first-place finish by Hempfield (4-2) was Lilliam Farmer's winning time of 1:01.63 in the 100-meter backstroke.
The boys' team improved to 5-1 with a 96-70 win at Warwick on the same day - Thursday, January 20.
The 400 freestyle relay team posted a winning time of 3:34.30 thanks to the efforts of Ardan McHugh, Will Russell, Jackson Root and freshman Ryan Taylor.
Taylor went on to win the 100 and 200m freestyle events with respective times of 1:53.90 and 53.60 seconds.
Kiran George, a sophomore, claimed the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.81.
WRESTLING
The Knights topped Manheim Township 48-20 in a big L-L League wrestling match on Wednesday, January 26. On the strength of Seamus Mack's major decision, a technical fall by Kamron Fickes plus five pins by the Knights, it proved to be an impressive victory.
Dylan Bard turned in a pin at the 215-pound weight class, pulling it off 5:37 into his gritty battle with Michael O'Hara.
Jorden Williams earned a 7-2 decision to give Hempfield a 15-6 lead. Despite a technical fall by Township's Kaedyn Williams at 113 making it a close 15-11 match, Zy McCain-Murray earned six points on a pin at 120.
Mack blanked Anthony Cummons for a major at 132. Reagan LeFevre, Braden Edwards and Grant Hoover each posted a pin at the 145, 152, and 160-pound weight classes, respectively. Fickes scored 16 in his technical at 172.
The win improved the Knights' record to 10-0 on the year (6-0 league).
BOWLING
The Black Knights remained atop the Section One standings with three straight wins at Leisure Lanes. Hempfield improved to 49-14 in the L-L League with triumphs over Penn Manor and Conestoga Valley. The Knights also topped Dallastown on Wednesday afternoon, January 26, raising their mark to 56-14 overall.
In the 7-0 defeat of Conestoga Valley on Thursday, January 20, Ethan Zimmerman bowled a 203 in his first game and a 202 in the second, finishing with 577 overall. As a team, the Knights registered 3008 points to the Buckskins' 2801.
Derick Keller led the Knights in the 5-2 defeat of Penn Manor on Monday, January 24. Keller had an outstanding second game, crushing the pins to the count of 290. He finished at 770 overall.
Priest McKenzie also had a great day, including his best game at 267 points (749 overall). Xander Green knocked 'me down at a pace of 247 in his third game (656 total) while Caleb Mertz peaked at 257 in his second game, finishing with 648.
Josh Stock (716) led the Comets.
Against Dallastown, Green and Mitchell Barnes led the Knights with Green collecting 673 points on the day and Barnes 664.
Keller finished with a 632 and McKenzie tallied 605 in this 7-0 victory.
