It's Never Too Late to Get Moving

If the word "exercise" makes you think, "That's not for me anymore," Juniper Village at Mount Joy wants you to think again. Its new SilverSneakers fitness program is designed specifically for older adults, with gentle movements and certified instructors who understand aging bodies. The program is focused on what is possible, rather than what is not.

SilverSneakers is a nationwide fitness program, supported by research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health. The Juniper Village initiative is free for residents of the retirement community as well as any community members with eligible Medicare Advantage plans.

"The idea to bring SilverSneakers to Juniper Village at Mount Joy grew out of our commitment to offering fitness that is both meaningful and motivating for residents," shared Rikki Goldenberg, national director of Catalyst for Juniper Communities. "We were looking to expand the variety of our group classes while also introducing a program with a strong reputation for results. SilverSneakers is widely known and trusted by older adults, so it felt like a natural fit for our community."

She noted that as the organization began conversations with the SilverSneakers team, it became apparent that the fitness program would provide an opportunity to deepen, not outsource, Juniper's wellness culture.

"Rather than simply hosting outside instructors, SilverSneakers offered to train and certify our own team members," Goldenberg said. "That aligned perfectly with the Juniper approach. Our Juniper associates know our residents, their goals and their abilities; having them lead SilverSneakers classes allows us to deliver a nationally recognized program in a way that is personal, consistent and tailored to each individual."

She emphasizes that Juniper Village also understands that fitness is not one-size-fits-all.

"Whether someone is wanting to build strength, improve flexibility or simply dance at a granddaughter's wedding, we believe movement should support real-life goals and be offered at the right pace for each person," she said.

SilverSneakers classes focus on improving strength, balance, flexibility and overall physical well-being, while also encouraging social connection and engagement. Gentle, chair-supported exercises enhance mobility and increase range of motion in all major joints, Goldenberg said.

"Exercise selection mimics activities of daily living, supporting participants in maintaining independence and quality of life," she explained. "Cognitive health exercises and social interactions keep minds sharp while fostering meaningful connections."

Research from the program shows that participants experience improved physical and emotional health, reduced social isolation and greater confidence in performing daily activities. Many participants report they would exercise less, or not at all, without the program.

"Give it a try!" Goldenberg said. "SilverSneakers classes are designed specifically for older adults, with movements that can be done standing or seated and at your own pace. It is about feeling better, meeting people and having fun. You might be surprised how great you feel afterward."

A mobility class is offered Mondays and Thursdays from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at Juniper Village at Mount Joy, 607 Hearthstone Lane. In the coming months, additional SilverSneakers classes will be added to the lineup.

Juniper Village residents can sign up in the community. Nonresidents can check their eligibility, access the class schedule and sign up for classes atĀ www.silversneakers.com.
