Hunger Run Benefits Hummelstown Food Pantry

Organizers report that the sixth annual Hummelstown Hunger Run was a great success this year, raising more than $30,000 for the Hummelstown Food Pantry. The food pantry also received two truck beds full of nonperishable food items donated by the participants and volunteers, along with bananas, water and snacks from the event.

This year's Hunger Run, held on May 8 at Schaffner Park in Hummelstown, featured a 5K run and walk, as well as a newly added 5-mile run. "We were very fortunate with the weather and had a great outing for the food pantry," said Jill Osevala, who runs the event along with her husband, BJ. "We had 265 participants and about 100 volunteers."

The male winner of the 5K run was Scott McGeary, with a time of 15 minutes, 48 seconds, which broke the record of 17:51 set in 2019. The female 5K winner was Joanna Hayes, with a time of 18:23. The first-place male winner of the 5-mile run was Nathaniel Clugston, with a time of 29:32. The first-place female 5-mile winner was Shelley Casey, with a time of 34:30.

The first- through third-place male and female runners received cash prizes and medals; medals were also provided for the first- and second-place male and female runners in each age group. Registrants and volunteers received gift bags.

There were also prizes for the first person who crossed the finish line with a leashed dog and the first finisher pushing a stroller. Kelly Dworak won the prize with her dog with a 5K time of 23:04. Hershey Pet Food Company provided the prize, which was a basket full of dog treats and toys. The 5K first-place stroller winner was Alison Faust with a time of 30:01, and the 5-miler first-place stroller winner was Else Fenn with a time of 58:16.

Jill and BJ expressed appreciation for those who donated their time and support, including Hummelstown Mayor David Roeting; Hummelstown Borough staff members; the volunteer fire police from Hummelstown Fire Company, who provided traffic control; and Miss Hummelstown Hannah Fischer.

The Hummelstown Hunger Run was created by the Osevalas to help support the Hummelstown Food Pantry. It is always held on the second Saturday in May. The seventh annual Hummelstown Hunger Run is scheduled for Saturday, May 14, 2022.
