Honey Brook Library Offers Summer Reading Program

The Honey Brook Community Library, 687 Compass Road, Honey Brook, is offering a variety of programming this summer for patrons of all ages as part of its Summer Reading Program, themed "Color Our World."

Among the new offerings is a knitting club for youths who want to learn the art of knitting. The next scheduled gathering, led by library volunteer Heather Buffington, will be offered on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 1 to 3 p.m.

"The program is for teens. They can bring their own knitting project," Heather explained, noting she has been knitting for 20 years. "They are encouraged to bring needles and yarn, but we have some here as well."

"Even if they already know how to knit, they can sit and knit with other teens," Heather added.

Heather's husband, John, leads the Drop-in Board and Card Games Club on select Saturdays from 1 to 3 p.m. Upcoming program dates are July 26 and Aug. 9. Participants are invited to play board and card games that the library owns or bring their own.

Participants are asked to pick up their Summer Reading Program packages at the library to register and then start reading. Those who bring in their reading log weekly will receive a ticket to be entered into a drawing to earn prizes. Those who bring in a nonperishable food item for the Honey Brook Food Pantry will earn one extra ticket.

Each age group has special reading requirements. "For preschoolers, they can have book read to them, and they color in one rectangle a week. For school-age children, they must read 30 minutes three times a week or be read to," explained Therese Mauchline, programming librarian.

"Teens must read three YA (Young Adult) books or seven graphic novels each week to get their ticket," she continued. "For adults, it's two books for every ticket."
