Honey Brook concert to feature All Purpose Band

The All Purpose Band (APB), which will play everything from Jimi Hendrix and Santana to Van Morrison and Aretha Franklin, will be featured as part of the Honey Brook Concerts in the Park series on Sunday, Aug. 4, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

The band is composed of professional musicians, including Rose Hudson of Harrisburg, vocalist; John Christopher of Hershey, bass and vocals; Dave Santana of Lebanon, drums; Robin Church of Lancaster, keyboards, trumpet and vocals; and Paul Colombo of Honey Brook, guitar and vocals.

Colombo said audiences can expect to hear a variety of covers during the concert. Selections will include "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" by Hall & Oates, "Rock Me" by Muddy Waters, "Moondance" by Van Morrison, "Sweet Dreams" by Eurythmics and "Rockin' Chair" by Gwen McCrae.

"We are called the All Purpose Band because we can do a lot of different types of work," Colombo said, noting that his band recently performed for 500 to 600 people at the Fourth of July celebration at the Hershey Theatre. "At the Fourth of July show, we had people dancing. Because we are more experienced, we are more versatile, we can go from classic rock to dance to blues to jazz."

Colombo, who previously performed in the Honey Brook Concert Series with The Fortunatos in 2022, said that the APB musicians have performed together previously, but they formed their own band just over a year ago. "The musician community is very small," he said, noting he has played with Santana and Hudson for over 10 years and he worked with Church in the pit band at the American Music Theatre in Lancaster from 1999 to 2001.

"When I first met Rose 10 years ago, she was a blues singer. We have expanded out of that into other stuff," he noted. "I played with Robin in The Fortunatos. He plays in other bands in central PA, including Maxwell (Project), which is huge in Harrisburg. Dave is a member of the Lebanon County Music Hall of Fame."

Colombo said that the APB is very motivated by the concertgoers and will play tunes depending on the audience's interests. "What is good about this band is our experience. We are not tied into one thing, and we can read a crowd and go in that (direction) if we need to," said Colombo. "Plus, it's my hometown, so I hope my friends will come."

The concert series will conclude on Sunday, Sept. 15, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., with a performance by the Neo Trio, which performs jazz, rock, funk and blues. Concerts are free and open to the public, but attendees are asked to bring a nonperishable food item for donation to the Honey Brook Food Pantry.
