Honey Brook Concert Series To Open With Rizzetta's Tones

Honey Brook Borough will begin its 2022 Concerts in the Park series on Sunday, June 12, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. with a performance by Rizzetta's Tones, a Celtic-American band that performs on unique musical instruments such as silver flutes, whistles, an autoharp, a Greek bouzouki and a button accordion.

All concerts in the series will take place in Honey Brook Borough Park, 71 Pequea Ave. (Route 10), Honey Brook. In lieu of an admission fee, nonperishable food donations will be accepted for the Honey Brook Food Pantry.

Rizzetta's Tones includes Randy Kochel, who plays the hammer dulcimer, the Greek bouzouki, the Irish button accordion and guitar; Amanda Wells on guitar and harmonica; Linda Lohr on silver flute, high whistle and percussion; and Bill Stine, who plays the hammer dulcimer and high and local whistles.

The band's newest member is bass player Jared McDonald. "He has been our sound engineer," noted Stine. "He wrote all the bass parts, and this will his fourth or fifth concert with us."

Rizzetta's Tones has played in Honey Brook before as part of the concert series. In 2012, several of the musicians performed with a different band called From the Well, which has since disbanded. During that event, a severe storm passed through the area with rain, lightning and 75-mile-per-hour winds, which destroyed the tent where the band was playing and damaged many of its instruments and the band's sound system.

"(We experienced) a derecho, which is a straight-line wind that is every bit as powerful as a tornado," Stine recalled. "People in Honey Brook that day so long ago were heroes. They ran toward us instead of back to their cars. We love Honey Brook and the people there. We have a connection."

Stine noted that the band was unable to meet, rehearse or play concerts during the pandemic, pointing out that Kochel is a medical doctor who cared for COVID-19 patients. "We played three concerts in 2019, and then we played none in 2020," Stine stated. "We came back in August of 2021. We played nine or 10 concerts (last year)."

During the upcoming concert, audience members will hear music from other countries as well as the United States and learn about the unique instruments that the band is using. "We do music mostly from Scotland, Ireland and a lot from America, which we 'Celticize.' We make it Celtic because we use Celtic instruments and rhythms and melodic ditties. There is a rhythmic feel to the whole thing."

He noted that those who have seen the band perform in the past will notice a whole new set of music. "We are always adding new music and trying to bring back everything we had before and rearrange it and make it more exciting." said Stine.

The Honey Brook Borough Park is located directly behind the Honey Brook Post Office.
