Holiday Shopping in a Historic Setting

Shop for handmade items in a historic setting at the Winters Heritage House Museum's Heritage Craft Show. The show will run from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 33-47 E. High St., Elizabethtown.

"The show invites visitors to shop handmade goods inside the museum's original 1760s log cabins and the historic 1877 H.U. Coble House," said Teresa St. Angelo, museum director. "It is an opportunity to begin holiday shopping while enjoying the charm of these distinctive historic buildings."

For shoppers who work up an appetite, soup, pulled pork and hot dogs will be available for purchase on Saturday.

This is the 36th year for the craft show, and it's become a well-attended community event, St. Angelo said.

Winters Heritage House Museum is located a half-block from the town square in Elizabethtown. Two of the buildings included in the museum property date to the founding of the town. The museum is a community project run mostly by volunteers. It offers educational programs, preserves local history and maintains a genealogy research library.

"Preserving the traditions of the past is an important part of Winters Heritage House Museum's mission," St. Angelo remarked. "These traditions help us understand how our communities came to be. Skills such as quilting, gardening, sewing and cooking connect us to the everyday lives of earlier generations - their creativity, resourcefulness and care for others."

She emphasized that the show offers a way to highlight both the art and the artisans.

"The artisans participating in our Heritage Craft Show carry these traditions forward, bringing their own creativity and skill to every piece they make. Behind each craft is a story," she said. "The museum is proud to provide a place where artisans can share their work, visitors can appreciate handmade craftsmanship and generations can connect through traditions that continue to enrich our community."

Admission to the craft show is free, but donations of canned goods for the local community cupboard or a new unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots will be accepted.

"Last year, the generous donations for Toys for Tots exceeded expectations," St. Angelo said. "We were so excited when the Toys for Tots representative came to pick up all the wonderful donations."

She hopes past attendees will return this year and new shoppers will discover both the event and its unique venue.

"Come enjoy a little history and get a head start on your holiday shopping," she said. "Explore our historic log cabins and Victorian Coble House. Discover unique handmade gifts and meet the talented artisans who create them. Your visit supports local creativity and helps Winters Heritage House Museum keep the stories and traditions of our community alive."

Parking for the craft show will be available on the street as well as in a free lot behind 33 E. High St. For more information, follow the Winters Heritage House Museum on Facebook, visit http://www.wintersheritagehouse.org or call 717-367-4672.
