Several National History Day (NHD) competition winners from St. John Neumann Catholic School, 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster, will compete in a virtual competition at Kutztown University on Saturday, Feb. 26.

The theme of this year's NHD contest was "Debate and Diplomacy: Successes, Failures, Consequences." Participants researched and completed presentations on topics ranging from the Louisiana Purchase to the end of Apartheid in South Africa. Students in sixth and eighth grades took part in the event, which was held in person by placing students and judges in separate rooms in the parish building.

Individual website winners were Molly Roark in first place for "From Helpers to Soldiers," Christina Cropper in second place for "The Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis & Clark Expedition," and Zoe Thurmond in third place for "The Korean War: America's Stance in History." Honorable mention went to Sebastien Baker for "The War to Not End All Wars: Treaty of Versailles."

The group website first-place winners were Hans and Ava Richter for "The Controversy and Consultations of the Berlin Blockade."

The first-place research paper winner was Madeline Keyes for "The Iran Hostage Crisis - From the Debate of Oil to the Diplomacy of Countries." Second place went to Emma Townsend for "Virginia: Not Always for Lovers."

Two students won prizes for individual exhibits. Levi Hockley won first place for "Executive Order 9066: Constitutional Rights at War," and Emma Stefanow won second place for "Spanish American War."

Winners in the Individual Documentary category were Finn Milligan, who won first place for "The Cuban Missile Crisis"; Alisha Klinger, who won second place for "The Treaty of Cession"; and Cristian Evans, who won third place for "The End of South African Apartheid." Honorable mention went to Ava Thurmond for "American Child Labor: Disruption, Dissension, Dispensation."
