Historical Society Slates Meeting

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will host Donna Stoltzfus as guest speaker at its meeting on Monday, Sept. 19. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy.

Stoltzfus will discuss her book "Captive," a coming-of-age novel in which a 13-year-old boy's beliefs about war and friendship are challenged when he works alongside German prisoners of war on a Mennonite farm in Lancaster County in the summer of 1944. The presentation will include photographs and stories of German prisoners of war who were sent to the United States during World War II and worked in Lancaster County. Attendees will view video clips of Ernest Rider, a prisoner of war, sharing his experiences.

The program is open to the community. The society building is open to the public every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. to conduct research and view displays of Mount Joy memorabilia. To learn more, visit http://www.mountjoyhistory.com.
