Historical Society Sets Meeting

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 17, at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy. The guest speaker will be Nancy Groff, who will present "Watt & Shand: East, West, Home's the Best."

The program, "Watt & Shand: East, West, Home's the Best" will emphasize Peter Watt's life and will mirror Nancy's book by exploring the history of the store, which was established in 1878. Nancy is a great-granddaughter of Peter Watt, one of Watt & Shand's founders.

A graduate of Manheim Township High School, Nancy now resides in southern Lancaster County. Nancy worked as a registered nurse before creating the Nursing Education Resource Group. In addition to nursing, she is a professional seamstress. Nancy is a volunteer with several organizations, including the Friendship Community; the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County; and James Buchanan's Wheatland, where she serves as a tour guide. Her book will be for sale at the meeting.

Refreshments and tours of the museum will be available following the program. The meeting is free and open to the public, and donations will be accepted.

The historical society's building is open every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Members of the public may stop by to see the displays of Mount Joy memorabilia. For more information about the historical society, visit http://www.mountjoyhistory.com.
