Historical Society Posts Quilt Activities

Hummelstown Area Historical Society invites community members to attend several quilting events as part of its 50th anniversary year celebration. Visitors must wear face masks and practice social distancing.

Board member Ann Holte hosted a quilting bee on Feb. 13 at the Parish House. Members of the Middletown Piece-Makers Quilt Guild demonstrated the American craft.

The World's Fair Quilt stitched by Emma Sutcliffe Hoerner will be displayed in the Parish House, located at the corner of Rosanna Street and North Alley, through Sunday, Feb. 28. The quilt has been loaned by granddaughter Alanna Berger. It was originally displayed at the World's Fair in New York City in 1939.

The Hummelstown Quilt will also be displayed through Feb. 28. The quilt's panels depict iconic scenes of the Hummelstown area. It was purchased by Edward Swartz when it was sold at auction in 1992 as a fundraiser for the Hummelstown Arts Festival. Swartz donated it to the society.

The Sleep Tight Show is currently open at the 1908 History House at 32 W. Main St., Hummelstown. The show features 60 child, infant, and doll quilts, many of which are displayed on their original doll beds and cradles. The show will remain through June during normal office hours of Mondays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. as well as the first Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Four Sunbonnet Sue quilts that were made by longtime Hummelstown resident Barbara Motter are also displayed. Cheryl Laudermilch has shared a quilt featuring ducks. Quilts sewn by Lillian Ferguson, grandmother of Jean Seibert, are also displayed.

There is no charge for attending the events, but donations are appreciated.
