The Millersville Area Historical Society will offer a presentation at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, in the Millersville Borough Administration and Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

Kenneth Sensenig, an educator and local history buff, will present "The American Revolution: A Crisis of Conscience in Rural Lancaster County."

His talk will focus on how a rural couple dealt with their ethics in the face of an appeal for assistance during the American Revolution. In 1778, Ephrata-area Mennonite pastor John Baer and his wife, Anna, faced a decision. Wounded Revolutionary War soldiers arrived at the Ephrata Cloister needing nursing care. The Baers faced the dilemma of reconciling their conscience with the complicated dynamics of the situation and the request for help. Their decision to help cost them their lives. Recent decades have brought fresh insight to the story, and last year the Baers received a new level of public recognition. The program will conclude with a question-and-answer period.

Sensenig, now retired, served the Mennonite Central Committee as a volunteer teacher in Africa for six years and as a public relations representative in the U.S. for decades. Because of his keen interest in local history, he also spent many years as a board member at Mennonite Life. In college, the Ephrata native studied education, earning a B.S. from Penn State, an M.Ed. from Millersville University and an Ed.D. from Temple University.
