Historical society plans meeting

Scott L. Mingus Sr., an award-winning Civil War and Underground Railroad author, will give a slideshow presentation "Human Interest Stories of the Gettysburg Campaign." Mingus will tell more than two dozen not-often-heard stories from the Gettysburg campaign and the battle. A question-and-answer session will end the meeting, at which time copies of Mingus' books will be available.

Mingus has written about 30 Civil War and Underground Railroad books and numerous articles for Gettysburg Magazine and other historical journals. He has appeared on various television programs and writes a blog on the Civil War history of York County. For his contributions to local Civil War history knowledge, he received lifetime achievement awards from the York County History Center and the Camp Curtin Historical Society. Along with Eric Wittenberg, with whom he co-authored the book "If We Are Striking for Pennsylvania," Mingus received the Gettysburg Civil War Round Table's Bachelder-Coddington Award for the best new book on the Gettysburg campaign.

In additional to his historical research, Mingus was also a scientist and executive in the global specialty paper industry. He was part of a research team working on self-adhesive postage stamps and was a pioneer in the early development of bar code labels. The York County resident is an Ohio native and Miami University graduate.
