Historical foundation posts annual meeting

Lititz Historical Foundation will hold its annual meeting on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 1:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road. After a brief meeting, local historian Brett Snyder will present a program on the life of H. Clifton Thorbahn. Snyder will share information from Thorbahn's scrapbook and additional sources, and the program will have a 1920s jazz music soundtrack.

Clifton Thorbahn was the son of Carl Thorbahn, leader of the Fulton Theatre Orchestra and a teacher of instrumental music at the high school level. Clifton graduated from Lancaster Boys High School in 1909 and Franklin & Marshall College in 1917. He was the leader of early Lancaster jazz bands, primarily the Serenaders, and regularly performed at Rocky Springs and Maple Grove parks. He also played at Warren G. Harding's inaugural ball in 1921.

In the early 1930s, Clifton acted in, wrote for, produced or directed numerous WGAL radio programs. He was also a contributor, editor or owner of a variety of publications, including "Pageant of Liberty," The Lancaster Guide, The Lancaster Magazine and the Lancaster Sunday News. His career also involved a brief stint in school administration and involvement in Lancaster tourism promotion.

The meeting and program are open to the public. To make reservations, call the Lititz Public Library at 717-626-2255.
