Historic Poole Forge To Hold Online Auction

Historic Poole Forge will host a 24-hour online auction on Friday, Nov. 18. Items that will be available include various classes and services donated by local businesses, as well as the featured item - a community quilt.

This year's quilt has been created with an intricate design of owls. "Every year at Poole Forge we do a community quilt. All the different patches are made by members of the community," explained Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director. "Last year, we got the idea to do owls. I brought some patterns and sent them out into the community. It was really challenging; you can see from the design. This year was special because normally we do something much simpler."

Community members were encouraged to create squares to contribute to the quilt. "It took a lot of work. The ladies all got together in September and quilted it," Ekdahl noted.

Also available for bidding will be a bird feeder made in the design of Poole Forge's covered bridge. "The covered bridge bird feeder was made by Larry Good, a talented carpenter and volunteer at Poole Forge, as well as a Caernarvon township employee. It was made from the original wood from the covered bridge when we replaced boards a few years ago," Eckdahl explained.

Other auction items will include a hot air balloon flight provide by Air Ventures Hot Balloon Flights, Glenmoore; a quilted owl pillow; spinning and weaving lessons by the Lancaster Spinners and Weavers; tickets to the Mother's Day Brunch at Historic Poole Forge mansion in May 2023; a weekend stay at the Inn at Twin Linden, donated by innkeeper Kyra Scalea; a sauerkraut-making class, donated by Deb Martin, Poole Forge board member and volunteer; a gift certificate for Inn & Spa at Intercourse Village, donated by innkeeper Carl Kosko; a natural dye workshop offered by Winona Quigley from Green Matters Natural Dye Company in White Horse; a half-hour massage from Churchtown Therapeutic Massage; and a photography portrait session by Mark Usciak, local photographer.

"Bob Lauffer, one of our Caernarvon Township supervisors, former ag and FFA teacher at Garden Spot and now president of the PA Scholastic 3D Archery Board, will offer archery lessons," Ekdahl noted. "A nature program (has been donated) by Phil Whitman, board member and former science teacher at Garden Spot, who now volunteers at the Philadelphia Zoo and gives nature programs in the community."
