Hironimus Nets a Hat Trick Against Spartans
A year ago, the Conestoga Valley girls lacrosse team dipped their toes into the District 3-3A playoff waters.This year they sit at 1-5 at roughly the midpoint of the 2022 season.
CV had a near miss on April 8th, falling to Garden Spot, 7-6. The Lady 'Skins held a 3-2 edge after intermission but that was not enough to overcome the 5-3 hole created over the first half. Jamie Handwerger stopped 17 while Jordyn Hironimus paced the attack with three goals. Annika Bredeman, Danae Ulrich, and Caroline Kulp added one score each.
Two days prior, CV lost to Lampeter-Strasburg 21-8. This time it was Sophia Hess recording the hat trick with Ulrich adding two goals. Bredeman, Isabelle Miller and Rachel Tsai added one goal each. Handwerger finished with 22 saves.
CV followed up the near miss with a 15-9 loss at Warwick. Ulrich was up next in the hat trick rotation with Bredeman and Hess adding two goals apiece. Hironimus and Kulp added one score while Handwerger collected 10 saves.
TRACK
The track teams skipped a regular dual meet in lieu of a trip to Landisville for the Black Knight Invitational on April 9th. CV posted an 11th place team finish on the boy's side and a 13th place finish for the girls.
The boy's accounted for eight podium finishes with Joey Castronova and Emmanuel Gitonga picking up two each. The pair, along with Carson Miller and Andrew Hoffner, finished fourth in the 1600m relay with Castronova taking fourth in the 400m and Gitonga fifth in the 800m. Jordan Sensenig added a fourth place in the high jump, Zach Stoudt a fifth place in the long jump while Thabo Lautsbaugh was seventh in the triple jump. Cater May, sixth in the discus, and Aidan Zimmerman, eighth in the javelin, rounded out the scoring.
For the girls, Grace Lapp picked up a bronze in the 300H then teamed with Jazlyn Cintron, Veronica Santamaria, and Kylynn Frankford for a seventh-place finish in the 1600m relay. Hallie Schnapf, Isabella Johnson, Alondra Ortiz, and Mae Lindor added a second relay medal, taking silver in the 400. Jess Koenig added a fourth-place finish in the 100H with Elle Emery joining her in eighth place. Seana Dougherty added an eighth place finish in the 3200m.
BOYS' LACROSSE
Undefeated no more. Thanks to a 9-7 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg on April 6th the CV boy's lacrosse team dropped from the ranks of the unbeaten. The Pioneers took control of the game with a 5-2 run through the third leaving CV short despite a 2-0 spurt over the fourth. Jeff Fisher paced the attack with two goals while Keller Dillman and Hunter Silvaggio added one goal. Tyson Zwaska, Noah Harrison, and Noah Nolt accounted for one score each while Ben Nolt stopped 15 shots in the loss.
The Buckskins rebounded two days later, topping Garden Spot 14-8. This time Ben Nolt split time in goal with Soren Stoltzfus with the pair combining for eight saves. Zwaska and Silvaggio both recorded hat tricks but it was Fishers' four goals pacing the team. Dillman and Noah Nolt added two goals each.
CV picked up another win one day later, topping Muhlenberg 11-4. Ben Nolt (four saves) and Stoltzfus (two saves) teamed up for the win while Fisher dished out three assists to go with four goals. Silvaggio netted another hattie with Dillman tacking on two scores. Zwaska and Isaiah Sensenig split the final two scores.
The Buckskins worked up a quick three game winning streak by topping Cocalico 14-11 on the 11th. Dillman lead the team with four goals while Fisher finished with three goals. Zwaska, Silvaggio and Sensenig had two goals each and Noah Nolt added one goal. Ben Nolt finished with 14 saves.
BASEBALL
The baseball team padded their win total, picking up victories over Lebanon, Penn Manor, and Lancaster Mennonite.
Up first was a 13-5 win over Lebanon on April 8th with Connor Esbenshade picking up the win. Sam Thompson covered the final two innings with the pair combining for 13 strikeout and two walks. Thompson helped out at the plate with a three-hit, three-RBI day while Owen Fisher added three-hits and two-RBIs.
CV eked out a 2-1 win over Penn Manor on the 11th thanks to a Comet error that allowed the winning run to score. Brendan Bossert earned the win despite just two-thirds of an inning. Owen Fisher covered the initial six plus and racked up 10 strike outs. Esbenshade knocked in CV's first run with a fifth inning single.
No close calls for CV in their 21-3 win over Mennonite on the 12th. Bossert got the start and the win for his 5.2 innings. Caden Miller pitched the final 1.1 innings to close out the win. Esbenshade, Evan Wilson, Titus York, Owen Fisher, Abdiel Fernandez, and Preston Fisher all finished with two-RBI while Kayden Fisher, Miller, and Seth Burkett had one RBI a piece.
SOFTBALL
The softball team used a visit from Lebanon on the 8th to break up a three-game slide with a 17-0 win. Rhiannon Henry gave four strong innings in the circle and added two RBIs to help her cause. Alexa Freeburn and Kassie Horning led with matching four-RBI days.
Three days later the Lady 'Skins dropped a 2-1 final to Penn Manor with the Comets plating the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Henry collected nine strikeouts in the loss. Laken Smith used her lone hit on the day to drive in CV's sixth inning run.
Conestoga Valley dropped a 3-0 final to Ephrata on April 12th. Henry covered all six innings and finished with 15 strikeouts but a hitless day at the plate for CV was too much to overcome.
VOLLEYBALL
The boys' volleyball team earned 3-0 wins over McCaskey and Cedar Crest, pushing their record to 3-1 in league play. CV was largely unchallenged by McCaskey on the 7th leading to 25-18, 25-22 and 25-11 wins. Jayden Rice tallied nine kills and Kenji Pha 30 assists while Kyle Hutchinson had 10 digs.
Things were closer against the Falcons with CV posting wins of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-15. Pha dished out 23 more assists while Carson Hoover finish with 12 kills.
TENNIS
The boy's tennis team continues to barrel toward the end of the season with two losses against a single win. CV swept the Warwick for a 7-0 win on the 8th and found themselves on the opposite end of the same final in their April 6th clash with E-town. The Buckskins followed the Warwick win with a 4-3, near miss opposite Lampeter-Strasburg on the 11th.
All three wins against the Pioneers came in singles action with Yuji Wenger, Jason Schlegelmilch and Henry McQuate-Krahnke the victors. All three also enjoyed singles wins against Warwick with Nolan Miller contributing. In doubles it was Grady Ray and Ivan Shrom, Luke Snader and Josiah Dillman and Sean Bell and Eli Lefever posting wins.
