Hiking club slates outings

A 6-mile hike will begin from the Pinnacle Overlook in Lancaster County on Sunday, May 5. People may meet at the York County School of Technology parking lot at 8 a.m. or the trailhead parking lot at 9 a.m. Heading north on the Conestoga Trail, hikers will encounter difficult terrain, including large hills, rock scrambles, and fording Tucquan Creek. An Appalachian Trail work hike is scheduled for Saturday, May 11. Participants may meet at 8:30 a.m. at Emigsville Park or at 9 a.m. at the parking lot at the Clarks Ferry Bridge. The tasks will be brush cutting and lopping. People are asked to bring a gasoline-powered brush cutter if they have one, as well as a lunch, hearing protection, and safety glasses. To learn more, contact Dave Strine at riverdawgmd@yahoo.com.

A Mother's Day hike will be held on Sunday, May 12. The group will hike the Appalachian Trail for more than 13 miles from state Route 309 to Lehigh Gap. Points of interest will include the New Tripoli campsite, Knife Edge, Bear Rocks, Bake Oven Knob and its shelter, and Lehigh Gap, where the river may be viewed from an elevation of 1,000 feet. Some sections are rocky and open. People should dress for the weather, wear sturdy hiking shoes, and bring water, snacks, and a lunch, as well as hiking poles if desired. There is a carpool fee. Attendees may meet at 6:30 a.m. at the Red Robin parking lot at the Galleria Mall and carpool for a fee, or they may meet at the hike leader's home. On Sunday, May 19, the club will hike 6 miles on the Chevrolet Trail at Patapsco State Park in Woodstock, Md. The hike, of moderate difficulty, will follow the Patapsco River. Attendees should wear hiking boots and bring hiking poles, water, and snacks. They will not stop for lunch, but the Woodstock Inn is located at the trailhead. Participants may meet at Boscov's at the Westminster Mall at 7:15 a.m. to carpool. Hike leader Andrew Bankowski may be reached at 410-493-3150.
