Hempfield Tennis Team Improves to 5-0 Overall

Hempfield posted two consecutive Section One victories, improving to 4-0 on the year in league play (5-0 overall). The Knights blanked McCaskey 7-0 last Monday and two days later, edged Penn Manor 5-2 - both in Landisville.

Grace Lehman and Sophie Carson outlasted McCaskey's Lauren Snell and Serena Asso-Gonzalez 8-5 in a tough battle at number one doubles.

Lydia Sullivan and Alex Gregory were 8-2 winners at number two doubles against McCaskey. Megan Wendell and Sabrina DeLeon notched an 8-4 victory.

Lehman (6-1, 6-0) Carson (6-0, 6-0) Gregory (6-0 6-0) and Sullivan (6-1, 6-0) won their singles matches in straight sets.

Manor's Catherine Rabatin was a formidable foe. Not only did she team up with Erin Shipley for a hard-fought 9-7 defeat of Carson and Lehman at number one doubles, but she also won the number one singles for the Comets' other team point.

Gregory and Sullivan were a winning combination (8-0) at number two doubles. DeLeon and Wendell finished the doubles play with an 8-2 win.

Gregory, Sullivan, and Wendell each won their respective singles match in straight sets.

GOLF

Warwick and Penn Manor both finished strong in Monday's Section One battle at Four Seasons. Warwick finished with 321 team points to Manor's 322. Manheim Township (327) took third while Cedar Crest (341) Lancaster Catholic (345) and Hempfield (349) also competed.

Sawyer Marten led the Knights with a 76. Matt McCullough shot a 90 while Evan Sipe and Ethan Greene had respective scores of 91 and 92. Hempfield fell to 5-10 on the year.

FOOTBALL

The Hempfield football team faced the fourth-ranked team in the District Three 6A power rankings on Friday night at Central York. The Knights hung in there against the Panthers, scoring two second-quarter touchdowns to even the score at 14-14 before halftime. They did so on two touchdown passes by Cameron Harbaugh, who connected with Aidan Shorter on a seven-yard toss and with Tom Minnich on a 43-yarder - both followed by Cannon Biscoe extra-point kicks.

"Cam threw for over 100 yards with a touchdown," head coach George Eager noted. "Central York played in the state championship last year. They have some good talent."

Beau Pribula's seven-yard touchdown run and his 27-yard scoring pass to Imeire Manigault helped Central regain momentum in the third quarter. Pribula finished with three touchdown passes on the night. The Panthers (3-0) added a rushing touchdown in the fourth to make it 35-14.

"We had a fumble, an interception and a blocked punt. They scored 21 points off those," said Eager.

With the Panthers taking a 35-14 lead, the Knights responded on Grant Hoover's 89-yard kickoff return.

That would, however, be the end of the scoring on September 10, as the Panthers turned away the Knights 35-21 in the non-league game. Hempfield fell to 1-2 on the year.

"This was the second week in a row that turnovers hurt us," Eager noted. "We keep stressing to our guys to play a clean game. If we do, we can compete with anyone on our schedule."

CROSS COUNTRY

The Section One girls' cross country meet at Lancaster County Park on September 14 was a very close one - the likes of which are rarely seen. Nearly all of the decisions were within a small margin.

E-town edged Hempfield 26-29 while McCaskey's runners topped Hempfield 26-30.

Ella Wolfe paced Hempfield with a second-place finish at 20:42. Molly Siebert ran at a 21:35 clip, finishing fifth, while Lucy Bishop (23:24) finished 14th.

The boys' team improved to 4-0 on the year, defeating Crest 16-47, and McCaskey 18-44 while dominating E-town 15-50.

There were nine Knights finishing in the top-15, led by Aidan Hodge. He won the race at a time of 16:40. Joe Fahrney was second (17:06).

Dale Winand (17:34) and Sam Freedman (17:35) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Both Isaiah Hollinger and Sam Myer registered 17:58 on the day, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively.

Ryan French finished at 18:06, earning 10th place. Chris Titter's 18:08 was good for 11th while Emerson Long (18:42) took 14th.

GIRLS' SOCCER

Coming off two shutout losses, the Hempfield girls' soccer team played Conestoga Valley to a 1-1 draw last Tuesday.

The Knights lost 3-0 to Penn Manor on Friday, September 10 and suffered a 2-0 loss to non-league foe Exeter the next day. In the 1-1 draw, both teams scored in the first half and maintained the score through the second half and two extra periods.

BOYS' SOCCER

Hempfield has outscored opponents 10-2 while getting off to a 3-1-0 start. In Section One boys' soccer action on Tuesday, the Knights blanked the Buckskins 3-0 at Conestoga Valley as Noah Felty made four saves in goal.

Nathan Leisure, Nate Schwartz, and Benjamin Singizwa each scored, taking assists from Devin Schmitt, Zach Antesberger and Andrew Potter.

The previous Friday, Luke Kramer scored two minutes into the match at Penn Manor off a Leisure assist. Schwartz doubled the lead late in the match, giving Hempfield a 2-0 win.

VOLLEYBALL

Joslene Morgan came through with six kills and Melody Butzer served up seven aces in Hempfield's 3-0 victory at McCaskey on Tuesday night, The Knights won 25-11, 25-11, 25-13, improving to 3-0 on the season.

Butzer also racked up 22 assists while Peyton Fisher led the squad in digs (six) and Sarah Hess in blocks with two.

FIELD HOCKEY

It was feast or famine for the field hockey team in the two non-league matches played on Saturday, September 11. Hempfield blew away Governor Mifflin 5-1 in the morning match but lost 5-0 in the second game against Lower Dauphin.

Sophomore goalie Paige Brosig made two saves in the victory. The offensive support was led by Keira Boensch, who scored goals in the first and third periods while also dishing off two assists.

Kelsea Dague had a goal and an assist. Liz Williams and Karly Bervinchak each netted one goal.

Williams scored a fourth-quarter goal in Monday's Section One showdown with Warwick, giving Hempfield a 2-1 win. Dague scored a goal in the opening period off a Williams assist.
