Helping the Four-Legged Friends

When Juliana Fieldsa is asked to complete a service project, she always manages to find the option that helps her four-legged friends.

Fieldsa, an eighth-grader at Pequea Valley Secondary, is amidst a National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) project that allows her to help animals in need. She has partnered with Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, a Chester County-based animal rescue that is in need of dog and cat food, toys, and more.

"In NJHS, we get to choose from four different projects for our chapter service projects each year, and I always hope that there's an animal option, because I think it's really fun," she said.

Last year, Fieldsa filled a carload of supplies for Lucky Dawg. This year, she has set up an Amazon wishlist that includes toys, food, medical equipment, and other related items.

To assist Fieldsa with her project, search for "Christy Fieldsa" on Facebook to find videos with more information about Juliana's efforts, along with the link to the Amazon wishlist.

Those who purchase items from the wishlist will be automatically prompted to send what they purchase to the Fieldsa residence.

"To turn everything in, what we have to do for NJHS is take a picture of all the things we've collected, and then we deliver them to wherever we're donating to. ... The other (options) were writing cards for an elderly home, collecting items for babies and children, and the fourth item was collecting books for a library."

NJHS, the predecessor to National Honor Society (NHS), offers membership to students in grades six through nine at participating schools. The organization's pillars are scholarship, leadership, character, citizenship, and service, all of which are relevant to Fieldsa's efforts.

Like NHS, NJHS requires students to endure an application process and then maintain certain academic and other requirements.

"You have to be in accelerated or honors classes to be able to apply," Juliana explained. "Then there's a long application process. You have to get a letter of recommendation, you have to show that you're upholding the five pillars in your daily life, and you have to complete 20 service hours."

Many students receive letters of recommendation from teachers, but Juliana said she got hers from a neighbor. She completes most of her service hours through Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), of which she is also a member.

Through GSUSA, she partnered with a fellow trooper from the Lampeter-Strasburg district to benefit Humane Pennsylvania's Betsy and Ted Lewin Adoption Center for Cats and Critters last fall.

Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue is located in Avondale. It offers adoptions and rescues and aims to support the community through "education, outreach, and information."
