Hay Day, Big Spring Farm Day set

Swiss Pioneer Preservation Association (SPPA) will hold Hay Day on Friday, Aug. 2, at 1 p.m. and Big Spring Farm Day on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Both events will take place at the Big Spring Farm, 735 Spruce Road, New Holland.

Hay Day will focus on demonstrations of hay-making methods used in bygone days. The event will feature a display and talk on early hay tools, dengelschtock (scythe-sharpening anvil), cutting hay with a scythe, a horse-powered sickle-bar mower, raking hay with a wooden fork, a tumble and dump rake, a side delivery rake, loading hay with three-pronged forks, using a hay loader, unloading hay in the barn with a horse-powered hay hook, baling with an Art Young baler made at Kinzer, baling with an early NH baler, picking up bales with an NH bale loader, saw milling, and a rare early crusher SPPA refurbished. There is a loading dock for tractor unloading, and attendees may see what their tractor or steamer can do. Horse training demonstrations will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.

Food will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., including pulled pork and bread freshly baked in the beehive oven in the 1786 Peter Martin Cabin.

Big Spring Farm Day will include threshing by hand with a flail, using horsepower, and using steam engines and tractors. Attendees may also see log sawing with a steam engine, a demonstration of weaving using a loom, a display of hit-and-miss and other engines and equipment, demonstrations of the SPPA's early crusher, bread baking in the beehive oven, and pottery making, chair caning, and other old crafts. Tours of the Peter Martin house will be available. German singing will commence at 12:05 p.m. Attendees may bring collectibles and crafts to the event. Food options will include sausage sandwiches, iron kettle soup, and hit-and-miss ice cream.

The tractor and equipment parade will begin at 1 p.m., and attendees may bring antique tractors, farm equipment, and horse-drawn wagons, buggies, and other conveyances.
