Have Fun At The Hellam Carnival

A small town will host big-time fun at the annual Hellam Carnival. The carnival will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 24 and 25, from 6 to 10 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 26 and 27, from 5 to 10 p.m. in the baseball fields off West Beaver Street in Hallam Borough.

"We have live entertainment every night," said Mark Potosky, chairman of the carnival. On Wednesday, local church groups will perform. Thursday evening's entertainment will be Grant Bryan, who performs cover songs. On Friday, Hometown Strangers will take the stage. "They played last year on Wednesday night, and they were a huge hit," Potosky stated. Country Express will wrap up the music on Saturday night. "They are a yearly carnival staple," Potosky noted.

Along with live music, the carnival will feature rides and games provided by Russ Amusements. Ride-all-night wristbands will be available each evening during the carnival, along with individual tickets. "We will also have numerous food vendors each day at the carnival," Potosky remarked.

Friday evening will feature a car show, sponsored by Porky's Place BBQ & Catering. It will begin at 6 p.m. and will include trophies for the winners. New this year, the car show will feature a Jeep division.

Saturday morning's festivities will include a horseshoe tournament. To register for the horseshoe tournament, contact Barry Sweitzer at 717-755-4406. On Saturday evening, the carnival will wrap up with fireworks beginning at 9:30 p.m.

The carnival dates back many years, Potosky said. "I think this is our 18th year," he commented. "It's a great community event. Come out and meet your neighbors, enjoy some wonderful food, ride some great rides and listen to some really great entertainment each night." He emphasized that although the carnival does not bring in large profits, any proceeds available will be donated to local organizations such as Eastern York Recreation Authority or the local library. He also pointed out that the carnival wouldn't happen without the support of community organizations, from operating food stands to providing safety and security at the event. "We have fire police who direct traffic for us, and we'll have an ambulance on-site," he stated. "We have police who patrol through each night. It's really a community-wide carnival."
