Handbell ensemble sets concert

Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 36 Church St., Rothsville, will host the Philadelphia Handbell Ensemble in concert on Sunday, May 4, at 3 p.m. as part of its 2024-25 Music at Jerusalem Concert Series.

Established in 2003, the Philadelphia Handbell Ensemble consists of auditioned, advanced-level handbell ringers from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Under the leadership of artistic director Ron Bellamy, a well-known local handbell choir director and solo ringer, the ensemble currently plays on six and one-half octaves of Schulmerich bells. Handchimes and a large number of percussion instruments are also used.

The group's repertoire spans original compositions, transcriptions of classical literature, and arrangements from a wide array of musical genres. The spring program - titled "The Storm Shall Pass!" - will include works such as Jason Krug's "Resounding Fury," Cathy Moklebust's "Thundersnow," and William Payn's "Prisms." The concert will also feature the world premiere of a soon-to-be-published original handbell composition by the group's associate artistic director, Bob Gardner.

A freewill offering will be received. Handicapped-accessible parking is available on the right side of the building, with elevator access through the double glass doors under the canopy. For more information, call the church office at 717-626-8972.
