Guild of Organists to offer concert
The Lancaster Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will host a recital at the historic Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster, on Thursday, June 13, at 7 p.m. For more than 50 years, the chapter's members have offered their talents in a concert to raise funds for scholarships.
The church sanctuary, more than 250 years old, is home to a large organ built by the Moller company in 1962. However, the sanctuary retains many features from past organs in the space, most notably the facade built by David Tannenberg, a legendary organ builder from Lititz, in 1774. Today, the organ is tuned in Silbermann mean-tone temperament, giving it a sound unlike most organs and keyboard instruments found in this area of the world.
Music selections will range from some of the earliest works of Dietrich Buxtehude and J.S. Bach to late Romantic French works. In addition to performances by Frank Dodd, Joy Ide, Gary Garletts, Ross Ellison, and Kyle Postlethwait, Robert Horton will play a live improvisation on a submitted musical theme. The concert will close with Karl Moyer performing Marcel Dupre's virtuosic "Prelude and Fugue in G Minor."
A freewill offering will be received to support the Guild's scholarship fund, which provides scholarships for young people to take organ lessons. One scholarship winner, Jaden Espenshade, will perform J.S. Bach's "Piece d'Orgue."
Parking can be found in the lot adjacent to the parish house and in the Duke Street parking garage.
