Groundbreaking Ceremony Held

Pappus House recently broke ground on its new, larger home located in Thomasville. The new home will include eight private bedrooms, expanding the organization's capacity and mission of compassionate end-of-life services. Pappus House currently operates a three-bedroom end-of-life home on Cherry Street in York Township.

Pappus House has raised more than $3 million through a capital campaign led by co-chairs Liz Shorb and Alexandra "Alex" Chiaruttini and honorary chairs John and Maria Polli. The capital campaign funds supported the purchase of the nine-acre property at 66 Big Mount Road in Thomasville, as well as architectural plans to redesign the facility, which was previously the York County SPCA. The campaign will continue to support the renovation and construction of the new eight-bedroom end-of-life home, coordinated by Kinsley Construction, as well as furnishing and sustaining the home.

Every aspect of the innovative new home has been designed to help dying individuals live as fully as possible, surrounded by the comforts of home, until their last breath.

Plans include eight large, private resident bedrooms with ample space for visiting family and even pets as well as private patios outside each bedroom to enable families to gather outside. Bedrooms will have double doors to access the patio.

There will be private bathrooms for each bedroom, roll-in shower rooms to enable all residents to enjoy a full shower in lieu of sponge baths, a large kitchen and dining area for families and visitors to gather, administrative areas for staff and volunteers, ample storage space, a spiritual sanctuary for prayer and quiet reflection, wide hallways for easy accessibility, a children's playroom and a family respite area with a featured area for pets.

All modifications will meet the requirements of a Pennsylvania licensed personal care home and ADA compliance.

Future additions to the new home will include tranquil landscaping with walking paths, reflection ponds and native gardens to attract butterflies.

Pappus House is dedicated exclusively to the needs of people with a terminal illness who are unable or do not wish to die in their own home. Specially trained staff and volunteers become extended family, providing continuous care, nurturing companionship, medication administration, home-cooked meals and personal hygiene in careful coordination with the family's chosen hospice provider. Pappus House works collaboratively with all hospice and health providers.

With purposeful intent to prove community need, Pappus House began its mission in December 2017 in a modest three-bedroom home. As many families seek this care for their loved ones, the current home consistently operates at full capacity and must turn away over 50% of referrals because beds are full.
