Gretna Music To Present Concerts

Gretna Music will present a weekend of live performances at the Mt. Gretna Playhouse, located at 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mt. Gretna. From Friday, Aug. 8, to Sunday, Aug. 10, audiences will experience a lineup of musicians, from the innovative expression of the American Patchwork Quartet (APQ) to the world-renowned Canadian Brass and the artistry of pianist Einav Yarden.

Select concerts in the series will be preceded by a First Listen program - a free, 20-minute mini concert. Prior to the APQ on Aug. 8 at 7:30 p.m., violinist Serafina Salvaterra will be featured at 6:45 p.m.

APQ, led by multi-Grammy award-winning guitarist/vocalist Clay Ross, combines American folk songs with jazz, country, West African and East Asian influences. APQ's debut album was recently nominated for "Best Folk Album" at the 67th Grammy Awards.

A free Gretna Music For Kids Event will be featured on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 11 a.m., featuring two musicians from APQ, including Ross and Falu, who performs classical Indian music. Ross is also the founder of the Billboard chart-topping band Ranky Tanky and a teaching artist, working with institutions like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. The free family-friendly event does not require tickets.

Canadian Brass will perform on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 7:30 p.m. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. Selling more than two million albums worldwide, Canadian Brass pairs classical favorites with humor and stage antics.

Yarden will be featured on Aug. 10 at 3 p.m. A First Listen program will be presented by pianists Chloe and Audrey Ren and Bryan Wu at 2:15 p.m.

Yarden has performed at venues worldwide, from the Berlin Philharmonie to Lincoln Center. Her accolades include a German Records Critics' Prize and teaching appointments at prestigious institutions like the Hochschule fuer Musik Franz Liszt Weimar.

Her program will include Haydn - Sonata in B-flat Major; Schubert - Impromptus Op. 142, Nos. 2 and 3; Haydn - Variations in F minor; Allen Krantz - "Some of my Favorite Things" (selection); Chopin - Barcarolle, op. 60; Lili Boulanger - Trois Morceaux pour Piano; and Erwin Schulhoff - Suite Densante en Jazz.
