Gretna Music To Host Trio

Gretna Music will present the McGill/McHale Trio on Sunday, July 10, at 3 p.m. at the Mount Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna.

The trio consists of brothers Anthony McGill, principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, and Demarre McGill, principal flute of the Seattle Symphony, along with Irish pianist Michael McHale. The McGill brothers met McHale at a residency, and since then, the three musicians have made time to perform and record together, creating a new body of work for piano, flute, and clarinet.

The upcoming program will include "A Fish Will Rise" from "River Songs" by Chris Rogerson, a Flute Sonata and a Clarinet Sonata by Francis Poulenc, "Vocalise" by Sergei Rachmaninoff, "The Beardless Boy" and "The Lamentation of Owen O'Neil" by Philip Hammond, the traditional tune "The Lark in the Clear Air," and "Tarantella" by Camille Saint-Saëns.

The concert's final piece will be "Portraits of Langston" by Valerie Coleman with narration by local spoken word artist Lawrence Martin Ryan. His recent works includes a principal role in "The Gospel at Colonus" presented by the Capital Area Music Association in Harrisburg.
