Gretna Music Posts Concerts

Gretna Music has announced three upcoming concerts, which will be held in the Mount Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna.

The Steve Turre Sextet will perform on Friday, Aug. 12, at 7:30 p.m., sharing both original music and arrangements of pieces from the Great American Songbook. Turee has been NBC's Saturday Night Live trombonist for 38 years as well as leading multiple ensembles, including a quartet and quintet. In his sextet, he plays the trombone and the conch shells. His collaborations with other musicians in the jazz, Latin, and pop realms and his own ancestral connection to the shells inform his musical practice and style.

The Grammy-nominated PUBLIQuartet will present contemporary works, improvisations and originals on Saturday, Aug. 13, at 7:30 p.m. The award-winning string quartet is committed to supporting up-and-coming composers through its program PUBLIQ Access and simultaneously growing interest in new music while keeping traditional classical music audiences interested through the group's project MIND|THE|GAP. The quartet's musicians have had success as individual artists as well as members of the group.

On Sunday, Aug. 14, Gretna Music will host Ladysmith Black Mambazo in concert at 7:30 p.m. The five-time Grammy-winning male choral group performs native South African music with a unique interpretation and style. The group has recorded with Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, and others. It was involved with Michael Jackson's "Moonwalker" video, Disney's "The Lion King," Clint Eastwood's "Invictus," and Eric Simonson's documentary "On Tiptoe: Gentle Steps to Freedom," and it made other media appearances, such as on "The Family Guy" and "Mean Girls." While the group was not working on award-winning CDs, it was nominated for an Academy Award and a Tony Award and won a Drama Desk Award. The group is led by its founder, Joseph Shabalala.
