GEARS posts sports programs and more

An information session about college financial aid will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the East Donegal Township Municipal Building, 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta. Representatives of Members 1st Federal Credit Union will share knowledge and resources to help people make informed decisions about funding higher education. The program is for prospective students, parents of prospective students, and currently enrolled students; it is open to people age 16 and up. The class is free of charge, but registration is required.

GEARS will hold tryouts and skill evaluations for the 2024-25 travel basketball leagues. All girls and boys in fifth and sixth grades who are interested are encouraged to try out. There is no tryout fee.

Girls' team tryouts will take place on Monday, Oct. 7, from 6 to 7 p.m. and Oct. 9 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the gym at Bear Creek School, 1459 Sheaffer Road, Elizabethtown.

Tryouts for fifth- and sixth-grade boys will be held on Oct. 7 from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. and Oct. 9 from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. in the gym at Bear Creek School.

The teams will practice two to three days per week and play games as scheduled. The season, including practices, will begin in mid-November and run through mid-February. All players selected for the travel teams will be asked to pay a participation fee.

A Mother/Son Harvest Hoedown will be held for boys with their mother, grandmother, or aunt, or a family friend age 18 or up. The event will take place on Friday, Oct. 11, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. The hoedown will include fall-themed games, arts and crafts, activities, snacks, and dancing. The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 4.

A Track and Field Camp for students in grades three to eight will be offered on Monday to Thursday, Sept. 30 to Oct. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Area School District grounds at 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Coached by Elizabethtown Area High School varsity track coach Derrick McDonald, the camp is designed to provide an introduction to all aspects of track and field, including training for events, rules of the sport, competitive strategies, equipment, nutritional needs, and expectations. Participants will work on distance, jumping, throwing, hurdles, starts, and relays, and they will find out how track and field can prepare them for other sports. The fee includes a T-shirt.
