GEARS plans activities

GEARS will offer several activities to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person cost, with a discounted rate for GEARS members. To register or for more information, visit http://www.getintogears.org or call 717-367-0355.

GEARS will offer tennis lessons for youths ages 4 to 14. All classes will meet on Tuesdays, Oct. 10 and 24, and Thursdays, Oct. 12 and 26, at the tennis courts at Elizabethtown Area High School, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown.

Iddy Biddy Tennis will be offered for children ages 4 to 6. Participants will learn agility, balance and coordination using the larger red balls and smaller nets and courts. Classes will be held from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

Beginner Tennis, for those ages 7 to 14, will teach children of any skill level the fundamentals of tennis using the red balls and smaller rackets, nets and courts. Through the use of games and drills, players will learn the proper technique for forehand, backhand, serve and volley. The class will be held from 6 to 6:50 p.m.

Intermediate Tennis is for players ages 8 to 14 who have completed two or more sessions of tennis lessons. Instruction will focus on continuing to develop tennis skills, footwork and prepare for match play. The class will be held from 7 to 8 p.m.

GEARS will host an AARP Driver Safety Refresher Program for people age 50 and up who have previously taken the eight-hour Driver Safety course. The class will be held on Oct. 10 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. The refresher course will fulfill requirements for a continuing insurance discount from any auto insurer doing business in Pennsylvania. All participants must bring evidence of previous course completion to receive a certificate. Participants must bring a valid Pennsylvania driver's license. There is a discount for AARP members.

Tai chi will be offered on Tuesdays, Oct. 10 to Dec. 12, for people age 18 and up at the Masonic Village Carpenter Chapel, 1244 Bainbridge Road, Elizabethtown. The class will focus on a 10-step tai chi form introducing students to the basic postures of tai chi. An introductory class will take place from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m., followed by an advanced class from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m.

GEARS' 27th annual four-person scramble golf tournament, sponsored by R.E. Pierson Materials, will take place on Friday, Oct. 6, at the Dauphin of Highlands Golf Course, 650 S. Harrisburg St., Harrisburg. Golf will begin with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. The fee includes green fees, use of a cart, lunch and prizes. Proceeds from this event will benefit GEARS.

GEARS will hold tryouts and skill evaluations for the 2023-24 travel basketball leagues. Tryouts will take place in the gym at Bear Creek School, 1459 Sheaffer Road, Elizabethtown. All girls and boys in fifth and sixth grades are eligible to participate. Girls' team tryouts will take place on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 9 to 10 a.m. and Monday, Oct. 9, from 6 to 7 p.m. Boys' tryouts will take place on Oct. 7 from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. and Oct. 9 from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m.

Travel teams will participate in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. They will practice two or three days per week and play games as scheduled. The season, including practices, will begin in early November and run through the end of January. All players selected for the travel team must pay a participation fee after selected.
