Garden Spot student recognized in essay contest

The Rotary Club of Eastern Lancaster County presented Garden Spot High School ninth-grader Emma Parsons with a citation and a check from Rotary District 7390 for her second-place finish in the district's Four-Way Test Student Essay Contest.

The contest was open to ninth-grade students across Rotary District 7390, which includes more than 40 Rotary clubs in seven counties throughout southcentral Pennsylvania. The essay contest - established as a way to teach the community's future leaders the ethics of Rotary - asked students to offer their thoughts on the importance of community service in their lives and include how Rotary's Four-Way Test impacts their thinking.

The Four-Way Test is a series of questions that Rotary members use to conduct their personal and professional lives. It asks the following four questions of the things a person thinks, says, and does: "Is it the truth?" and "Is it fair to all concerned?" as well as "Will it build good will and better friendships?" and "Will it be beneficial to all concerned?"

The Rotary Club of Eastern Lancaster County presented Emma with the citation and check during the club's May 23 meeting. While the district selected the winning essays, the club was impressed with the amount of volunteer work carried out by Emma.

The Rotary Club of Eastern Lancaster County has been serving the community since 1944.
