"Gaither Homecoming" concerts set in Hershey

Gospel music legends Bill and Gloria Gaither will present a Gaither Homecoming Celebration at the GIANT Center, 550 Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 20 and 21. Concerts will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 20 and 2 p.m. on Oct. 21.

An avid fan of gospel quartets throughout his childhood, Bill Gaither founded his first group, The Bill Gaither Trio, in 1956 while in college. A few years later, he met Gloria Sickal, and the two married in 1962. They went on to pen more than 700 songs and become ASCAP Songwriters of the Century.

In 1992, before retiring, Bill gathered his quartet, The Gaither Vocal Band, and a few of his longtime heroes, like Jake Hess, Hovie Lister, Howard and Vestal Goodman, James Blackwood, Glen Payne, George Younce and JD Sumner, to record the classic song "Where Could I Go?" After recording the song and taking a group photo, those gathered continued playing music and sharing stories for several hours. The result was the "Gaither Homecoming" music collection. The series gave birth to the "Gaither Homecoming" concert tour, which has taken place in cities worldwide with collective attendance figures exceeding more than 1.1 million. Nearly every volume in the DVD and CD series has been certified gold or platinum.

The Gaither Homecoming Celebration brings together more than 30 artists on one stage. This event will feature Bill's vocal band, consisting of Wes Hampton, Reggie Smith, Adam Crabb and Todd Suttles, as well as Gaither alumnus Mark Lowry, Grammy award-winner Jason Crabb, Gospel Music Hall of Fame group The Nelons, and multi-award-winning artists like The Martins, Karen Peck and New River, The Booth Brothers, The Sound and Jeff and Sheri Easter. Other Homecoming artists set to participate include Lynda Randle, Joy Gardner, Ladye Love Smith, Gene McDonald, Wesley Pritchard, Sue Dodge, Ann Downing, Angie Primm, Woody Wright and Lauren Talley, as well as several of new friends, including Chris Blue and Jake Cowley.
