Friends group will host book sale

Summer is the perfect time to add to your to-read list, and the Friends of the Milanof-Schock Public Library will make it easy for you. The group will host its annual book sale from Thursday, June 20, through Saturday, June 22, at Donegal High School, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. On Thursday, a preview and purchase event will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. with an admission charge. There is no charge to attend on Friday, June 21, when the sale will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., or on Saturday, when the sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Saturday, all books will be one price per bag.

More than 40,000 books will be for sale, with separate prices for hardcover, paperbacks and children's books, as well as a section for specially priced items. Along with books of every genre, the sale will feature DVDs and CDs.

"We also have a lot of collectible-type magazines," shared Diane Rice, who is co-chairing the book sale with Lora Jones. "That was a category we had stopped for a while, but we still get donations, and there is value to the magazines." Magazines will be grouped by topic, ranging from dragons to woodworking.

Each book sale offers unique titles and a wide variety of genres, Rice said. "This year we have a very, very strong history section," she commented. "We have had a lot of really good donations of history books. We also have a strong special-pricing section."

A concession stand will offer hot dogs, barbecue, sweets, treats and drinks during the book sale. Proceeds from the book sale and concession sales will benefit the Friends of the Milanof-Schock Library, a nonprofit group of volunteers created to support the library. All revenue from the sale supports new materials, programs and equipment, and proceeds go directly to library programs and services.

Rice noted that the sale relies on volunteers who sort books year-round in a storage shed behind the library and work shifts at the event. The Friends also voiced their appreciation for library staff and board members, who are helping to defray the cost of moving the approximately 800 boxes of books from storage to the high school for the sale.

"We are also very thankful to Donegal High School, because they bend over backwards for us," Rice said.

She hopes people will come out to explore what the sale has to offer, adding, "There's just such a wealth of books for everybody. These are quality books at good prices."

Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted at the sale. Shoppers are encouraged to bring tote bags. The Friends group is always seeking adult volunteers. For more information, visit https://friendsofmsl.org or search for "Friends of the Milanof-Schock Library" on Facebook.
