Former PT boat gunner to speak

The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable will meet on Thursday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 433 E. Main St., Hummelstown. Charles Brooking, 96, will speak about his experiences serving as a gunner on a PT boat in the Pacific Theater.

Raised in Bloomsburg, Brooking enlisted at age 17, which required his dad's signature. He saw action near the Solomon Islands and Guadalcanal, patrolling at night to fire on Japanese ships and barges. Manning his twin .50 caliber machine guns, while his crew was under attack from enemy aircraft, he shot down a Japanese Zero fighter plane. One of the PT boats that Brooking served on, PT-617, is on display at Battleship Cove: America's Fleet Museum in Fall River, Mass.

The meeting is open to the public, and no registration is required. For more information, visit http://www.centralpaww2roundtable.org or join the livestream on the YouTube channel Central PA WWII Roundtable.
