Finding a Place to Play

When people participate in community theater, the experience offers much more than a chance to step on stage, said Jennifer Turner, who recently discovered the joy of joining a theater troupe.

"Community theater provides a place for folks to play, use their imaginations, try new things, develop confidence, make friends and explore possibilities," she said.

Turner, of Manheim, began volunteering with The St. James Players (TSJP), a theater group that operates in the Lebanon Valley Mall, in August of last year.

"2025 was a year of change and growth for me," she said. "I buried my mom, accepted new positions at both of my part-time jobs, started graduate school, turned 50 and decided to say yes to more opportunities," she recalled.

She attended her first show at the theater in July to support a co-worker.

"When I saw an advertisement for the Christmas musical audition, I decided to try out," Turner said. "Amazingly, I got a part and discovered a place where I felt alive, at peace and able to play. The community I discovered at TSJP also enriches and challenges me."

Everyone at The St. James Players is a volunteer, including the organization's founder, Karen Dundore-Gulotta, who started the group in 2018.

Dundore-Gulotta had been involved in theater for decades and wanted to create a theater troupe with a mission to provide quality, inclusive and free theater opportunities, showcasing people of all ages, abilities and talents to unite the community.

Each year, the theater produces several mainstage shows in addition to Star Academy. Star Academy is a free, six-week after-school program for children ages 7 to 15.

Since joining the group, Turner has acted on stage and supported the troupe with ticket sales, concession purchases and candy grams.

"I also share information about the theater every chance I get," she said.

The St. James Players' next show is "Someone Save My Baby, Ruth (Or ... Foil That Villain)," which will run on six dates in February.

"I play the candy shop owner and am excited to work with a talented group of adult and kid actors, singers and stagehands," Turner said. "Did I mention that the show centers around candy?"

When she's not onstage, Turner teaches social studies at Lancaster County Academy and is a lead cook and kitchen assistant at Gretna Glen Camp and Retreat Center in Lebanon. She lives in Manheim with her husband and cats, and has two children, four bonus children and six grandchildren. Along with live theater, Turner enjoys reading, writing, drinking coffee, playing guitar and having deep conversations with friends.

She typically spends between five and seven hours a week dedicated to The St. James Players during the month before a show, and when she's not in rehearsal, she's studying lines and getting into character.

She has no regrets about taking the leap into community theater.

"I decided to join because I like the inclusive environment and the kindness that permeates every interaction," she said. "Plus, performing at TSJP is fun and free."

She hopes other people will considering participating in a theater group.

"Say yes to opportunities and make time for play!" she said. "Also, community theater is a great place to use your talents. Novice and experienced carpenters, cleaners, concession sellers, program folders, performers - everyone is welcome."

Turner said she's so glad she made 2025 her year of "yes" because it brought her to The St. James Players.

"When I step into the theater, I feel the stress, cares and worries of my day melt away," she said. "As I stretch myself to learn lines and get into character, I discover new skills and find joy in playing. I have also cultivated friendships with my fellow performers, directors and stage helpers who patiently and kindly collaborate with each other. I look forward to each rehearsal and show as I try new things, develop new skills and have fun."
