Fiddler's Picnic Scheduled

The New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) program, will conclude with the annual Fiddler's Picnic in the New Holland Park on East Jackson Street. This year's picnic will be held on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fiddlers are encouraged to arrive early to reserve a slot on the park stage.

The performance schedule allows a 30-minute spot for a group and 15 minutes for a single act or a duo. Usually up to 15 acts perform, and the picnic is often a place for musicians to join up to make music together. Musicians who are considering playing on stage together will sometimes gather in spots far from the stage to practice and often draw a crowd to their own mini concert.

In addition to string players, individuals who play the accordion, harmonica, or keyboard may visit the park to join in on well-known favorites such as "Rocky Top," "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," "Orange Blossom Special," and "Golden Slippers." Country and bluegrass tunes are staples of the event.

The picnic portion of the event is supplied by the New Holland Lions Club, which brings its food trailer and offers items for purchase. According to Lions Club representative James Bronson, club members will serve barbecued chicken, hot ham sandwiches, chicken corn soup, hot dogs, sides, and beverages. NiCE SiZE FRiES and Schaatz Ice Cream will be on-site.

A signed and numbered Myrtle Tremblay print of the Robert Fulton Birthplace located on Robert Fulton Highway in Quarryville will be at the show for viewing. The framed print, which measures 27 by 32 inches, will be given away as a prize at the Fiddler's Picnic.

NHSAP is an all-volunteer organization that has existed in New Holland for more than three decades. New volunteers are welcome. Help is especially needed with setting up prior to concerts and clearing the park afterward. Volunteers to accept freewill offerings during intermissions are also needed.

No admission will be charged for the Fiddler's Picnic, but freewill offerings will be received throughout the day. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
