Fall fundraiser and festivities planned at library

The Friends of the Quarryville Library will host a chicken barbecue fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Quarryville Library Center, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville. Tickets are available to purchase in advance at the front desk, and each ticket will include a barbecued half-chicken, a bag of potato chips and a bottle of water. A limited number of tickets will be sold on the day of the event while supplies last, and prepurchased meals must be picked up by noon.

Every year, members of the Wakefield Lions Club volunteer to assist with the barbecue by setting up a tent outside the library to cook the meals. The rain-or-shine fundraiser will also include a book sale and yard sale inside the library. A variety of items and used books donated by members of the community will be available to purchase during the sale.

The funds raised by the annual barbecue, book sale and yard sale will help the library cover its operating costs and general expenses. Additionally, the proceeds will support programs that the library offers to the community. The Quarryville Library recently updated its calendar with multiple events and activities that it will offer this fall.

The library's Walking Book Club will meet Thursday, Oct. 19, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Enola Low Grade Trail entrance located at 301 E. State St., Quarryville. Participants will convene to discuss "The Marriage Portrait" by Maggie O'Farrell, a historical fiction novel based on the story of an Italian noble placed in an arranged marriage in the late 16th century. The club was created in March by the Quarryville Library's program manager, Sharon Roche. "It was personal for me; I need to get more time outside and I like to read, walk and talk to people," Roche said. "I figured there would be others who felt the same way, and sure enough there were." Roche organizes the program on a monthly basis, and she selects each meeting's book based on the number of copies available in the library system to ensure the club is accessible to the community. Participants are required to register on the library's website prior to the event.

On Thursday, Oct. 26, Lisa Sanchez from the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will host a cider-making event at the Quarryville Library. From 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Sanchez will offer a presentation on the history of the apple tree, and she will demonstrate how to make the apple cider using a traditional cider press.

To get community members into the Halloween spirit, the library will host Haunted Lancaster on Oct. 26 from 6 to 7 p.m. During the event, local historian Keith Greenawalt will discuss paranormal legends and folklore that have originated from Lancaster County. The annual Pumpkin Parade will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 10:30 a.m. and will offer opportunities for youngsters to hear kid-friendly Halloween stories, complete crafts and STEM activities and receive a treat. Registration is required.
