Event to celebrate art and music by refugees, immigrants

Arts at Millersville University We The People First Friday, in partnership with Church World Service and the Pennsylvania Migrant Education Program, will present "Acts of Welcome" on Friday, May 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. This annual celebration of the artistry of Lancaster's refugee and immigrant communities features people from different cultures giving performances of various kinds.

Hosted by Rachel Helwig of Church World Services, performances will begin place at 6:30 p.m. in Steinman Hall. Currently scheduled artists include Ukrainian actress, singer, and producer Anna Koziar, who will sing, recite poetry by a Ukrainian author, and provide a presentation about a fund she has created called the Ukrainian Performing Arts Fund. Additional performers will include a Nepali youth dance troupe under the direction of Dilli Chapagain, along with singer Ramiro Valasco, who is a Colombian immigrant.

An opening reception for an exhibit by artist Ayad Kalbosh, who relocated to Lancaster from Iraq, will be held in the Regitz Gallery from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit will remain on display through Friday, May 26. The Ware Center Regitz Gallery exhibits are open during business hours on Mondays to Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with occasional evening and weekend hours.
