Event To Bring Civil War History To Life

A Living History Encampment and Tactical Demonstrations event will be held at the Robert Fulton Birthplace Museum and Garden, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), Quarryville. The event will be open on Saturday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Camps will also be open from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, May 20.

At the Living History camp, re-enactors will portray President Abraham Lincoln, first lady Mary Todd Lincoln, and their sons Robert and Tad as they were in 1865. People may visit with the family members throughout the weekend and participate in a family sit-down at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tad will be present on Saturday only.

The Living History camp will also feature generals; the Invalid Corps; a Confederate soldier portrayed by Al Avery; author and program organizer J. Arthur Moore, sharing information about the boys of the Civil War; author Bruce Mowday; and Frank Vattelana, a collector of Civil War photography.

Re-enactors Alan Farley and Faith Farley will act as members of the United States Christian Commission. Visitors may converse and pray with them throughout the event and join them for a worship service on Sunday at 1:15 p.m. following the battle re-enactment. The Farleys will also have their coffee wagon on-site.

Attendees may visit both Union and Confederate military camps, which will include infantry, dismounted cavalry, gun collections, camp life information, artillery and rifle demonstrations, a mortician, and a lead casting station. Firing demonstrations will take place on the battlefield, as will a battle on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at noon.

The Old Iron Grill plans to be operational by noon on Friday and to continue offering food throughout the weekend.

Visitors may access the parking area from Swift Road. Handicapped-accessible parking will be available along the edge of the field closest to the event. Visitors should expect some uneven terrain. A nominal parking fee per vehicle will be charged.
