Event to benefit High Hopes for Haiti

The Mortel High Hopes for Haiti Foundation will host a Celebration of Hope on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Englewood, 1219 West End Ave., Hershey. All are invited to come to this special evening to celebrate the past, present and future of the foundation. It was founded by the late Dr. Rodrigue Mortel, who had a mission to empower impoverished people in Haiti through education.

Every day, Haitians struggle with affording the high price of food, fuel and other critical supplies they need for their families. Walking children to school can be perilous because of gang violence.

The foundation's schools aim to serve as an oasis of hope for both children and adults in the Saint-Marc community, located in western Haiti. This year, the schools opened on time, with most students able to return.

The children receive daily meals and learn in a safe place. Adults can attend literacy classes to become more self-sufficient and to support and help their families. All of this is made possible by donors, who want to make a difference in the lives of those who are in need.

A Celebration of Hope will include a dinner with wine and beer, a cash bar, dancing, a silent auction and an opportunity to win prizes. Attendees will be able to enjoy time with friends while learning more about the accomplishments of the dedicated students, teachers and staff members in Haiti. There will be a toast to Mortel on what would have been his 90th birthday.
